How Permanent Bag Sealing Tape Works
See how the permanent adhesive creates a secure, one-time closure and visible evidence after the package is opened.
Resealable vs. Permanent Bag Sealing Tape
Both products are double-sided sealing tapes used during plastic bag production, but they provide different opening performance. Choose the tape according to whether the package requires repeated access or a secure one-time closure.
| Feature | Resealable Bag Sealing Tape | Permanent Bag Sealing Tape |
|---|---|---|
| Closure type | Opens and recloses multiple times | One-time, non-resealable closure |
| Opening result | Bag normally remains reusable | Bag or sealing area shows visible damage |
| Main purpose | Convenience and repeated access | Security and tamper evidence |
| Typical bag films | PP, OPP, PE and compatible films, depending on grade | Treated HDPE, LDPE and compatible films |
| Common applications | Apparel, stationery, food and retail bags | Courier bags, poly mailers and document bags |
| Adhesive performance | Controlled peel and reclosure | High initial tack and permanent hold |
| Available formats | Pancake rolls and long-run spools | Pancake rolls and long-run spools |

Bag Film Compatibility
Bag material is one of the most important factors when selecting sealing tape. Film formulation, thickness, slip additives, printing, surface treatment and production temperature can all affect adhesion and liner-release performance.
| Bag Film | Available Closure Options | Selection Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PP / OPP | Mainly resealable options | Select the tape series according to hot-cut temperature and required peeling performance |
| PE / LDPE | Resealable or permanent | Choose according to whether repeated opening or tamper evidence is required |
| HDPE | Mainly permanent closure | Surface treatment and adhesion testing are important |
| CPP / CPE | Project-specific resealable options | Confirm film formulation, thickness and cutting conditions |
| PLA | Project-specific | Test adhesion and processing temperature before production |
| Laminated films | Custom selection | Provide the complete film structure and samples for evaluation |
Application Case: Matching Bag Sealing Tape to Different Packaging Requirements
A flexible packaging converter contacted Champion Packing for sealing tape used on two different plastic bag applications. One bag required convenient repeated opening for retail packaging, while the other required a secure, one-time closure for shipping.
Customer Requirements
The customer needed:
- Resealable closure for retail product bags
- Permanent closure for courier and mailing bags
- Smooth release-liner removal
- Stable adhesion during storage and transportation
- Compatibility with the existing bag-making equipment
Although both products used plastic films, their closure requirements and opening performance were completely different.
The Challenge
During the initial evaluation, the resealable tape showed inconsistent peeling on the customer’s retail bag film. For the courier bag, the original permanent tape did not provide sufficient adhesion after sealing.
The performance differences were related not only to tape width, but also to the bag-film structure, surface treatment, adhesive position, cutting temperature and production-line conditions.
Our Recommendation
After reviewing the bag samples and application requirements, our team recommended:
- A controlled-peel resealable tape for the retail bags
- A high-tack permanent tape for the courier bags
- An adjusted adhesive position to match the bag-opening direction
- A suitable roll format for the customer’s production line
Samples were supplied for testing on the customer’s actual bag materials before bulk production.
Test Outcome
The revised resealable tape provided smoother liner removal and more consistent reopening performance. The permanent tape created a stronger one-time closure and visible evidence after opening.
This project demonstrated that bag sealing tape should be selected according to the complete packaging structure and production conditions—not only by tape width.
| Project Item | Retail Packaging Bag | Courier Bag |
|---|---|---|
| Closure requirement | Repeated opening and closing | One-time secure closure |
| Recommended product | Resealable bag sealing tape | Permanent bag sealing tape |
| Main evaluation points | Peel strength, residue and liner release | Initial tack, permanent hold and tamper evidence |
| Tape format | Pancake roll or spool | Pancake roll or spool |

Bag Sealing Tape FAQ
What is bag sealing tape?
Bag sealing tape is a narrow double-sided adhesive tape applied near the opening of a plastic bag. After the release liner is removed, the bag flap is pressed onto the exposed adhesive to close the package.
Is bag sealing tape double-sided?
Yes. Most resealable and permanent bag sealing tapes use different adhesive systems on the two sides. One side bonds the tape to the bag film, while the other side creates the final bag closure after the release liner is removed.
What is the difference between resealable and permanent bag sealing tape?
Resealable tape allows the bag to be opened and closed multiple times. Permanent tape creates a one-time closure that normally damages the bag or sealing area when the package is opened.
Which bag sealing tape should I use for PE or PP bags?
The correct tape depends on the exact film type, thickness, surface treatment, additives, production temperature and required opening performance. Provide a sample or complete film specification before placing a bulk order.
Can the tape width and adhesive position be customized?
Yes. Tape width, adhesive width, left, right or center glue position, release liner, printing, roll length and spool format can be customized according to the bag design and production line.
Can I test samples before ordering?
Yes. Sample testing on the actual bag film is recommended to confirm adhesion, liner release, cutting performance and opening behavior before bulk production.
