Polyimide Tape vs. Kapton® Tape

Polyimide tape is the general term for adhesive tape made with polyimide film, while Kapton® is a registered trademark of DuPont for its polyimide film.

Polyimide tapes can provide similar high-temperature masking and electrical insulation functions, but should not be described as genuine Kapton® tape unless DuPont Kapton® film is used.

Ultra-Thin Polyimide Tape for Electronics

Our 25 μm polyimide film provides high-temperature protection and electrical insulation with minimal added thickness. The standard PI2560 tape has an approximate total thickness of 60 μm, making it suitable for compact electronic assemblies where insulation space is limited.

Ultra-thin polyimide tape is commonly used for PCB masking, flexible circuits, battery components, coils, motors and precision electronic devices.

5 μm Polyimide Film

Thin insulation for compact electronic assemblies.

Approx. 60 μm Total Thickness

Provides heat protection without adding excessive bulk.

High Dielectric Strength

Suitable for electrical insulation and electronic components.

Custom Narrow Widths

Precision slitting and die-cut parts available for small components.

Polyimide Tape for PCB Masking

Polyimide tape provides thin, heat-stable masking around sensitive PCB areas during soldering and thermal processing. It is especially useful where precise edge definition and clean removal are required.

Gold Finger Masking

Protect gold fingers and edge connectors from solder, flux and contamination while maintaining a clean masking boundary.

Wave & Reflow Soldering

Mask selected PCB areas during wave soldering, reflow and other short high-temperature production cycles.

Selective Soldering

Protect nearby pads, connectors and components when only selected areas of the PCB are exposed to soldering.

Application Tips for PCB Masking

  • Clean flux, oil and contamination from the surface before application.
  • Apply polyimide tape with low tension to avoid lifting during heating.
  • Press masking edges firmly around pads and gold fingers.
  • Keep overlaps small and consistent where overlaps are required.
  • Confirm peak temperature and dwell time before production.
  • Allow the assembly to cool before peeling.
  • Inspect masked areas for residue and edge definition after removal.

Quality Control & Storage

Quality Control

We control polyimide film thickness, adhesive coating, adhesion, slitting accuracy and finished roll dimensions to maintain consistent performance between production batches.

Storage

Store rolls in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and high humidity. Keep unused tape sealed in its original packaging.

Handling

Avoid touching exposed adhesive surfaces and keep die-cut parts on their release liner until placement. For controlled electronic assembly, follow your normal ESD handling procedures where required.

How to Choose Polyimide Tape

Different PCB, insulation and assembly processes may require different film thicknesses, adhesive systems and tape formats.

Application Film / Total Thickness Adhesive Recommended Format Why
Gold Finger Masking 25 μm film / approx. 50–60 μm total Silicone 6–12 mm strips / die-cut frames Thin profile and clean heat removal
Tight PCB Keep-Outs 25–50 μm film Silicone 3–6 mm strips / precision die-cuts Helps maintain precise masking edges
Battery & Insulation Wraps 25–50 μm film Silicone or Acrylic 12–24 mm rolls / kiss-cut sheets Select adhesive according to heat and holding requirements
Fixture & Abrasion Protection 50 μm+ film Silicone 12–48 mm widths Increased mechanical protection
ESD-Sensitive Areas Grade-dependent ESD-safe system Rolls / die-cuts Used where static control is required

Final tape selection should consider peak temperature, dwell time, electrical requirements, substrate, removal method and production format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Polyimide tape is mainly used for PCB masking, wave soldering, reflow processes, electrical insulation, battery assembly, motors, coils and precision electronic components. Its thin polyimide film provides thermal stability and dielectric insulation in demanding production environments.

Yes. Polyimide tape is widely used to mask gold fingers, pads, connectors and keep-out areas during soldering and other thermal processes. The thin film helps maintain precise masking edges while the adhesive is designed for clean removal after the validated heat cycle.

Our standard PI2560 grade is specified for use at 200°C under validated conditions. Actual performance depends on peak temperature, dwell time, adhesive system and substrate, so testing under your real production conditions is recommended.

Silicone adhesive is generally preferred for high-temperature masking and clean removal, while acrylic adhesive can provide different holding strength and long-term bonding characteristics. The correct adhesive depends on temperature, substrate and whether the tape is used temporarily or permanently.

Our standard PI2560 uses a 25 ± 3 μm polyimide film with approximately 35 ± 5 μm of silicone adhesive, giving a total tape thickness of approximately 60 ± 5 μm. Other thicknesses can be supplied according to application requirements.

Not exactly. Kapton is a DuPont trademark for a specific polyimide film, while polyimide tape is the broader product category. The term “Kapton tape” is commonly used in the market to describe high-temperature polyimide adhesive tapes.

Polyimide film offers good dielectric performance while remaining thin and heat stable. This makes it suitable for insulating coils, motors, transformers, battery components and other electrical assemblies where space is limited.

The silicone adhesive is designed for clean removal when used within the specified temperature and dwell-time range. Excessive heat exposure, contaminated surfaces or removal while the part is still hot may increase the risk of adhesive residue.

Yes. Polyimide master rolls can be slit to custom widths according to PCB masking, insulation and assembly requirements. Standard and customized roll lengths are available.

Yes. We can convert polyimide tape into custom frames, discs, washers, tabs and other precision die-cut shapes according to drawings or application requirements.
